 Travel Journal Instructions

Supplies Needed:

3 sheets of Mixed Media 140lb 9×12
3-4 sheets of matching cardstock
4 pieces of Tyvek measuring 1 ½ x 4 and scored at ¾
Scor-Tape
Scor-board
Wet Glue
4 pieces of Hug Snug or other ribbon approximately 40 inches long each
3/8 inch hole punch (We R Memory Keepers is what I use)
Inks, stamps, paper, etc  for decorating cover

 Part 1

Part 2

Step 1:

Cut one sheet of the mixed media on the 9 inch side at 4 ½ (keep one piece, you won’t need the other piece) Place this on a scor-board on the 12 inch side and score at the following

                1 ½, 4 ⅝, 4 ¾, 4 ⅞, 5, 5 ⅛, 8 ⅜, 8 ½, 8 ⅝, 8 ¾, 8 ⅞
Now you can decorate the outside of your journal cover any way you like and set aside

Step 2:

Using your scor-board, score your remaining two sheets of mixed media on the 9 inch side at 4 ½ and then on the 12 inch side at 3, 6, and 9. Tear each sheet on the 4 ½ score line and then on the 6 inch score mark. These will be your pages. (The pages can be cut as well if you don’t want the torn edges, just cut at the 4 ½ on the 9 inch side and then at 6 on the 12 inch side, score the resulting pieces at 3).
Each signature will take two of these sheets and one of the pockets that we will make next.

Step 3:

Cut two pieces of cardstock to 4 ½ x 6 and score at 3 on the 6 inch side. These will be two of your pockets. Put a piece of Tyvek on each centering the Tyvek over the score mark. On one side of the pocket put a piece of ¼ inch scor-tape on the top and bottom. Then fold the pocket and set aside. (You can use a tab punch here to cut out a thumb section on the top of the pocket.)

Step 4:

Cut one piece of cardstock to 4 ½ x 7 ½ and score at 3 and 6 on the 7 ½ inch side. Put a piece of Tyvek on each centering the Tyvek over the score mark. On one side of the pocket put a piece of ¼ inch scor-tape on the top and bottom. You can round the corners of the pocket flap and add a tab punch if you would like. Fold the pocket and set aside.

Step 5:

(This will go on the back cover as a pocket on the inside) Cut one piece of cardstock to 2  x 5 ½ and score at ½ inch on the two short sides and one long side. Cut and remove the corners that this will create. Put scor-tape on the ½ inch flaps and set aside.

Step 6:

Cut one piece of cardstock to 6 ½ x 6 7/16. On the 6 ½ inch side score at 1 ½ and 6 and then turn your paper so that the 1 ½ inch part is on top and score again at ½ and 3 ½. Trim your pocket to match the picture and then add your Tyvek just like before and set aside.

Step 7:

(This will go in the pocket in the back of your book from Step 5) Cut one piece of cardstock to 4 ¾ x 5 ¾ and score on the 4 ¾ side at 1 and 4 ¼ then turn your paper with the 1 inch part on top and score again at ½ and 3 ⅛. Trim your pocket to match the picture and then add your Tyvek just like before and set aside.

Step 8:

Group your mixed media pages and the pockets from Steps 3, 4, and 6 as follows. Each group should have 2 of the mixed media pages and one pocket.  This will create four different signatures each with a pocket. Hold one of the signatures together firmly while punching a 3/8 inch hole from the bottom and from the top at the folds. Repeat this with the other 3 signatures. Then punch matching holes in the spine of your cover which will be the first group of five score marks from the left.

Step 9:

Hold one of the signatures and thread one of the pieces of Hug Snug/Ribbon through the holes by placing one end in the top hole and the other end in the bottom hole. Then thread this through the binding of your cover leaving the top tail approximately 3 inches longer than the bottom. Use a large bull clip to hold the pages still and repeat with the other three signatures.

Step 10:

Tie all eight pieces of hug snug/ribbon together in a double knot after carefully pulling the signatures all the way to the binding. These tails will be used to wrap around your book and close it.

Step 11:

You can now close up your pockets and you are done. This is where I will use wet glue right next to the scor tape to keep the contents of my pockets from sticking to the scor tape. Tie your book closed and trim the ends.
